I Got Up Early on a Sunday to Explore the Underground Tunnels of Sheffield’s Megatron
Christopher Hallam joins Sheaf & Porter Rivers Trust volunteers for a training walk through Sheffield’s Megatron, a network of mid-19th-century culverts beneath Sheffield Railway Station. The tour follows the Porter and Sheaf waterways through dark, narrow and sometimes hazardous tunnels, highlighting industrial relics, a new natural light well and the conservation work supported by tour proceeds. Wildlife, including trout, birds, invertebrates, bats and invasive signal crayfish, is returning to the waterways. Conditions can change quickly with rainfall, and some sections may reach chest height, but the experience is described as both demanding and invigorating. July tours have sold out, with further tickets expected for August and September.
