About Cindy
Hi, I've been working for many years as a journalist, first in California, then Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and now back in Hong Kong. I started out working for newspapers and then switched to wire agency reporting when I worked for Agence France Presse (AFP) as a Beijing-based foreign correspondent from 1999 to 2006. In late 2006, I moved to Taiwan and after freelancing for international, regional and local publications for about a year, I became the BBC's Taiwan correspondent, branching out into broadcast media (both radio and TV), while continuing to write text stories for its website. In the past decade, I also learned to film and edit my own video stories, some of which were the most viewed on the BBC's website. I'm available to do all sorts of journalism work except for fixing and translating, though I can refer you to friends and students who can help. In Hong Kong, I focus on writing analyses and feature stories about Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China, to help the world understand this important region. I speak Cantonese and Mandarin fluently and can read Chinese well-enough to understand press releases and media reports.

Taiwanese citizens are grappling with rising inflation and stagnant wages, leading to economic hardships and a sense of hopelessness. Despite the upcoming election, many believe that the economic situation will not improve due to systemic issues favoring the wealthy. The Democratic Progressive Party is criticized for focusing on political disputes with China rather than addressing domestic economic concerns. The economic performance of major companies like TSMC and Foxconn is not translating into benefits for ordinary people, exacerbating the financial struggles of small business owners and workers.

Economy and cost of living at top of mind in Taiwan's election

12 Jan 2024  |  www.marketplace.org
Economic concerns and the cost of living are central issues in Taiwan's upcoming election. Citizens like Chen Yu-hong and Chen Ya Hui are struggling with rising inflation and stagnant wages, while profits from major technology companies like TSMC and Foxconn do not benefit ordinary people. The Democratic Progressive Party faces criticism for prioritizing political disputes with China over improving living standards. Many young people, such as college student Jack He, feel a strong sense of helplessness and consider moving abroad due to the lack of economic opportunities. The election's outcome may hinge more on economic issues than political ones, with both the U.S. and China closely monitoring the results.

The article discusses a notable trend in Taiwan where white-collar professionals are leaving urban areas to work in agriculture, reversing the historical migration from farms to cities. This shift is attributed to Taiwan's longstanding emphasis on high-tech and manufacturing sectors, which originally drew the workforce into urban centers. The BBC's Cindy Sui explores the reasons behind this unexpected demographic and professional movement, highlighting a significant change in Taiwan's labor patterns.

Low Voter Turnout in Hong Kong's First District Council Elections Since Electoral Overhaul

10 Dec 2023  |  Voice of America
Hong Kong's district council elections saw a significantly lower voter turnout at 27.5% compared to the 71% in 2019, following an electoral system overhaul. The new rules reduced the number of directly elected representatives and introduced a requirement for candidates to be nominated by government-appointed committees, effectively excluding the pro-democracy camp. Three pro-democracy activists were arrested for protesting against the election. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee defended the elections, stating they were to prevent the chaos of past protests and ensure councilors serve without betraying the country. Despite government efforts to boost turnout, analysts expected low participation due to boycotts or apathy. Some voters expressed support for the government's restoration of order, while others felt voting was pointless due to the lack of genuine choice. Singh Baljinder, a Sikh candidate, highlighted the importance of the elections for representing ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s Journalist Associations Call for Protection Under New Security Law

10 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com
Hong Kong's two main journalist associations, the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, have raised concerns about the proposed expansion of the national security law, known as Article 23. They argue that the law's broad definitions and scope could severely impact press freedom and the ability of journalists to perform their duties without inadvertently breaking the law. The associations have called for a public interest defense clause to protect journalists and emphasized the importance of press freedom for good governance and Hong Kong's status as an international business and media center. The Hong Kong government maintains that the law is necessary for national security and has received broad public support, but journalist associations remain skeptical and worried about potential overreach and lack of clarity in the law's application.

Can Journalism Survive in Hong Kong?

05 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com
Journalism in Hong Kong faces significant challenges following the enactment of Beijing's national security law in 2020. Local journalists report increased self-censorship, fear of retribution, and a decline in press freedom. The proposed Article 23 law could further restrict journalistic activities. High-profile news outlets like Apple Daily and Stand News have shut down, and many journalists have left the profession. Despite these challenges, some journalists remain committed to their work, focusing on non-political stories and social impact reporting.

Explainer: What Is in Hong Kong’s New National Security Law?

05 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com
Hong Kong's government is in the process of adopting a new national security law, which critics argue will further erode civil liberties. The law, required by Article 23 of the Basic Law, aims to address lingering national security threats from the 2019 protests. It will expand the scope of the existing National Security Law (NSL) to include offenses like treason, insurrection, and espionage. Critics, including Amnesty International, argue that the law will transplant mainland China's security standards to Hong Kong, extending police powers and restricting due process. The law also introduces a new offense of 'external interference,' which critics say lacks clear definitions and could stifle civil and international organizations. The public consultation period for the proposed legislation ends on February 28, with the draft bill expected to be announced by mid-year.

Can Macao Become Asia’s Las Vegas?

05 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com
Macao, the world's largest gambling city, is attempting to diversify its economy by investing in non-gaming attractions to reduce its dependence on gaming revenue. Despite efforts to attract non-gaming tourists and government mandates for casino operators to invest in non-gaming projects, the city remains heavily reliant on gaming. Challenges include limited direct flights, competition from other Asian casinos, and a transportation system struggling to handle tourist influxes. The Chinese government's restrictions on gambling and efforts to curb corruption have also impacted revenues. While some progress has been made, it remains uncertain if Macao can transform into a diversified leisure and entertainment hub akin to Las Vegas.
