He told women he was a special forces soldier turned multimillionaire. It was all lies
Joseph Gibson, a 35-year-old from Ruthin in Denbighshire, was jailed for three years and two months after admitting four fraud offences that defrauded three women and one man of £68,000 between July 2020 and October 2021. He used Tinder and an elaborate false persona, claiming to be a multimillionaire former Special Boat Service soldier, cancer patient and wealthy investor with luxury properties, cars, yachts and helicopters. Victims were persuaded to provide money for business stock, investments and alleged cancer treatment; several were left in serious debt and one had only 93p remaining. Bristol Crown Court refused to defer sentencing so Gibson could attempt to repay more money, and proceedings will begin under the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover assets. The judge called Gibson a fraudster who had deceived both his victims and the court, while police described the lasting financial and emotional consequences of his manipulation.
