Fewston Can’t Bury Its Dead: Find Out Why on Heritage Open Day Tour
The Washburn Heritage Centre will host guided tours of Fewston’s churchyard during Heritage Open Days on September 13 and 20. The tours will explain why a Home Office decree ended burials at St Michael and St Lawrence Church in 1896, despite burials having taken place there since at least 1613. Visitors will learn about notable graves and local residents, while the centre’s archaeological excavation and reburial work will also be highlighted. Booking is required because places are limited, and the church, heritage centre and tea rooms will be open during the events.

Bradford Council warns of possible enforcement action against Forde
Bradford Council has warned that it may take enforcement action against Forde Restaurant in Ilkley if the restaurant fails to provide information about alterations to an atrium seating area. Forde owner Matt Healy says the space was permitted under the lease and was improved to increase accessibility and safety, while the council says the alterations breach lease terms and may raise planning, health and safety, or other regulatory concerns. Healy has said he could leave the restaurant’s premises in late 2027 if the dispute cannot be resolved.
