Memories of RAF Sealand's 'Gate Guardian' Spitfire
In October 1988, RAF Sealand removed its corroding gate-guardian Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI TD248, which had stood at the base since the 1960s, so Historic Flying could restore it to airworthy condition. A Hawker Hunter replaced it at the entrance. The Spitfire, formerly issued to 610 Squadron for static display at Hooton Park, returned to flight in 1992 and is now operated by Spitfires Ltd and maintained at IWM Duxford. Former RAF personnel and local residents recall the aircraft with affection, while aviation specialist Nick Walch explains why its registration and squadron markings have changed over time.
