Wethersfield Asylum Centre to remain open until 2029
The government has confirmed that Wethersfield Asylum Centre will remain open until 2029, extending its use two years beyond the previously agreed closure date and raising its standard operational capacity from 800 to 1,245 residents. Braintree MP and former Home Secretary James Cleverly says more than 2,000 people support his petition demanding closure and is seeking an urgent meeting with Home Office minister Anna Turley. Residents, campaigners and charities have protested against the extension and raised concerns about the site's isolated conditions and residents' mental health, while operator Clearsprings Ready Homes has faced criticism over standards at asylum accommodation sites.
