Essex fly infestation affecting vulnerable residents
A severe fly infestation affecting Great Bromley and nearby north Essex villages is disrupting residents’ daily lives, particularly those who are elderly or otherwise vulnerable. The Great Bromley Fly Action Group, which has more than 1,200 members, says residents are suffering mental-health impacts, sleep disruption and significant pest-control costs. Campaigners remain dissatisfied with an eight-page response from Tendring Council, dispute claims about the flies’ range and say complaints have not been handled properly. They are seeking a formal council meeting, considering escalation to the Local Government Ombudsman and Equality and Human Rights Commission, and pursuing legal advice over compensation.

Dovercourt 20mph speed limit scrapped after review
A proposed 20mph speed limit zone in Dovercourt has been withdrawn following a review that found no collision data supporting the need for reduced speeds. The change had been planned as part of a multimillion‑pound public realm scheme designed to improve the Kingsway corridor and attract more visitors. Tendring Council’s Ivan Henderson supported slower speeds for town-centre regeneration, while Essex County Council determined the limit would offer minimal additional safety benefit. The wider improvement project will continue, focusing on accessibility, parking enhancements and business support.

Naked Essex drunk who threatened with hammer spared jail
David Cooper received an 18‑month community order after admitting to exposing himself, using threatening language and causing property damage while intoxicated in Harwich. The court heard he distressed neighbours by appearing naked and wielding a claw hammer. Mitigation cited alcohol issues, and he was ordered to complete rehabilitation days, unpaid work and pay compensation and costs.
