Turbocharge special needs internships to help tackle UK youth jobs crisis, says Milburn
Alan Milburn’s government review is expected to recommend a major expansion of supported internships for 16- to 24-year-olds with special educational needs and disabilities, including autism and mental illness. The schemes provide tailored workplace experience and job coaching, with reported employment outcomes far above the rates for some disabled young people generally. Milburn argues that rising youth economic inactivity reflects a shortage of opportunities and support rather than a lack of effort, and calls for schools and services to identify and assist at-risk children much earlier. England currently has about 4,500 supported internships, but limited capacity, low awareness and uncertain funding prevent wider access. The review’s final recommendations are expected in autumn.
