The search for Myanmar's mysterious Dhammazedi Bell

BBC 18 Aug 2014 English

The journalist meets with an individual at the Schwedagon Pagoda who presents maps indicating that the Yangon and Bago Rivers have altered their courses over the past 400 years. This information suggests that current search efforts for an unspecified object or location may be misguided, as they are based on outdated geographical data. The change in river courses implies that the true search area might be different from where it is currently focused.

Spill from Hell: Diluted Bitumen

Thetyee 22 Mar 2013 English

The article discusses the Canadian federal government's commitment to enhance oil tanker safety measures along the coast of British Columbia. These measures include annual inspections, increased aerial surveillance, and stronger pollution prevention at oil handling facilities. The context is the debate over the safety of transporting bitumen, a super heavy crude oil from Alberta, by pipeline, rail, or tanker. Kinder Morgan plans to expand its pipeline capacity, which has met with opposition due to concerns about the risks posed by bitumen, as exemplified by the costly Enbridge pipeline spill in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The article highlights the challenges of cleaning up diluted bitumen (dilbit) spills, as it behaves differently from lighter crude oil, sinking to the bottom of water bodies and complicating cleanup efforts. Vancouver faces a dilemma with the proposed pipeline expansion and the potential risks of a dilbit spill.
