Drivers are warned about road closures and major works across St Helens. Holt Lane in Rainhill is closed for Scottish Power electricity works, while Birchley Street and Brynn Street are affected by Cadent gas mains replacement works. Council resurfacing is scheduled for Islands Brow and Parr Stocks Road. Longer-term disruption continues on Corporation Street and Library Street because of the new St Helens bus station, and on Queen Street and Railway Street in Newton-le-Willows because of the Earlestown regeneration programme. Motorists are advised to check the council’s latest information because dates and traffic-management arrangements may change.

Businesses in St Helens town centre are concerned that new road closures linked to public realm regeneration will disrupt deliveries, supplier access, staff and customer parking, and trade. Closures affecting Bickerstaffe Street, Hall Street and surrounding roads are scheduled from August 24. Appetites Kitchen and Catering and Spanish restaurant La Casa Vieja fear the works could threaten local livelihoods and customer access, although both businesses say they will remain open.

Dale Leatherbarrow, 42, is wanted by Merseyside Police after being recalled to prison for breaching release conditions following a theft sentence. Police provided a physical description and asked anyone with information to contact them or Crimestoppers.
