British dementia patient facing 'inhumane' deportation from Sweden
Horace Mason, a 74-year-old British man with vascular dementia, Parkinsonism and heart complications, faces deportation from Sweden to the UK after his post-Brexit residency application was rejected. His family and doctors say the 12-hour journey and loss of his established 24-hour care could endanger his life, but Sweden's Migration Court of Appeal ruled that regulated immigration outweighed his private and family interests. The family is seeking a temporary halt to the removal so the case can reach the European Court of Human Rights, while campaigning and fundraising for legal costs. The case has renewed criticism of Sweden's restrictive immigration policies and its high rejection rate for British residency applications under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement.

They shut prison wings under the guise of renovations to hide staffing crisis, whistleblower claims as violent offenders freed early
A serving prison officer, identified as Sam, claims prison wings in England and Wales are sometimes closed and described as undergoing renovations to conceal chronic staffing shortages. He says overcrowding, limited time out of cells, cancelled visits, violence against officers, synthetic-cannabinoid exposure and frequent disturbances are placing prisons under extreme strain. The report examines HMP Millsike in East Yorkshire, where staffing problems have delayed the facility’s expansion, while its private operator Mitie Care and Custody says operations are being phased in according to prisoner numbers and requirements. The government plans to add 14,000 prison places and release thousands of serious offenders early, but the officer and the Prison Officers’ Association argue that insufficient staffing and rehabilitation capacity undermine the policy. The Ministry of Justice says it has transparent procedures for reducing capacity and that frontline staffing has reached 92% of its target.

'Sense has not prevailed': Council slammed for removing England flag ahead of Argentina World Cup clash
Portsmouth City Council removed an England flag from a communal balcony, citing fire safety rules supported by Hampshire Fire & Rescue, prompting strong criticism from Reform UK councillor George Madgwick and MP Suella Braverman. Critics argued the decision undermined national pride ahead of England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina and called for the ruling to be reversed. Council leader Steve Pitt defended the removal, reiterating requirements to keep communal balconies clear of hazards while encouraging residents to display flags inside their homes.
