Draft protocol for the risk-benefit assessment of fish consumption
A draft protocol developed by EFSA outlines the methodology for a comprehensive risk-benefit assessment of fish consumption in the EU population, integrating nutritional benefits with risks from contaminants including dioxins, PFAS, PBDEs and mercury. The document defines assessment questions, data sources, modelling approaches, exposure analysis methods and plans for integrating results using metrics such as DALYs. It excludes shellfish, fish oils and dietary comparisons, focusing solely on finfish. Communication strategies will incorporate consumer perception research, and uncertainties will be systematically evaluated. The Committee on Toxicity is invited to comment on the protocol’s approach, scope and clarity before submission at the close of the consultation period.
