Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander said Andy Burnham has given Labour a “second chance to make a first impression,” creating renewed excitement, goodwill and hope despite the UK Government’s recent unpopularity. Alexander identified financial breathing space for struggling families as a key priority before the 2029 general election and praised former prime minister Keir Starmer’s role in rebuilding Labour. He also defended his opposition to Scottish independence after John Swinney linked Alexander’s appointment to deteriorating relations between the UK and Scottish governments. Reflecting on Scottish Labour’s poor election performance, Alexander admitted the party underestimated the SNP’s durable support, which he said is rooted in voter identity and habit, while arguing that Scotland’s divided anti-SNP vote presents a major structural obstacle.

Former Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said leading the party is the hardest job in British politics and urged the three leadership contenders—Michael Marra, Joe Fagan and Monica Lennon—to avoid infighting and preserve working relationships after the contest. Sarwar acknowledged that Labour struggled to communicate its vision during the spring campaign and was damaged by scandals involving Keir Starmer’s government. He declined to endorse a candidate, while Lennon argued that the party must rediscover its political identity. Sarwar also reaffirmed his support for replacing the House of Lords with an elected senate representing the nations and regions.
