Garrett Schools Implementing New Cellphone Policy
Garrett County Public Schools will ban students from using cellphones during the school day, including in class, lunch, transitions and structured or unstructured learning activities. The policy, approved by the Board of Education in June, complies with Maryland legislation signed by Gov. Wes Moore that requires local school systems to adopt electronic-device policies by the 2027–28 school year. Phones must be stored out of sight, although exceptions are allowed for documented disabilities, health needs and other circumstances identified in state law. Staff will provide students with implementation guidance and procedures at each school.

Three Projects to Receive Federal Funding
The Appalachian Regional Commission is providing $562,851 in federal funding for three Maryland projects focused on education, workforce development and supportive housing. The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg will purchase scientific and computing equipment; the Archway Recovery Program will renovate apartments and support adults recovering from mental illness or living with developmental disabilities; and Garrett College will upgrade equipment at its welding laboratory and training center. Maryland’s congressional delegation said the investments will expand opportunity, strengthen workforce development and improve long-term community stability.

Flintstone Wins Mountain League Baseball Junior Division Championship
Flintstone defeated the Cresaptown Eagles 6-5 at Memorial Field in Potomac Park to win the Mountain League Baseball Junior Division championship. Flintstone overcame a 5-4 deficit in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game when Brock Divelbiss scored on a passed ball before Noah Swadley scored the walk-off run on a wild pitch. The victory completed a 15-1 season for Flintstone.

Driver arrested, stolen handgun recovered in Westernport stop
Police arrested a Westernport man during a traffic stop on Route 36 and recovered a stolen firearm along with quantities of fentanyl and crack cocaine. The suspect, Brandon James Hartman, was taken into custody without incident after a deputy observed a traffic violation.

Rotary, Casselman Valley, Bedford, Personal Best, Flintstone win in Mountain League
Cumberland Rotary defeated Amoroso’s 21-2 in a three-inning Mountain League Junior Division baseball game at Hamilton Field, led by Anthony Hawley’s two doubles and four RBIs. Multiple Rotary players recorded multi-hit games, and several contributed multiple runs and RBIs in the decisive win.

Oakland Oaks walked off by Carmichaels Copperheads, 5-4
Carmichaels rallied in the final inning to defeat Oakland 5-4, scoring twice with two outs on a tying double by Noah Mildred and a walk-off hit by Ben Shields after an Oakland error extended the inning.

Armed Oakland woman arrested in parking lot incident
Law enforcement officers arrested Danielle P. Newcomb in an Oakland parking lot after reports of a person with a gun. Police said she possessed a loaded .22-caliber handgun and allegedly threatened occupants of a nearby business.

Cumberland man arrested in arson threat
A Cumberland man, Ajax B. Zavitz, was arrested on a warrant for allegedly threatening to burn down a residence on Maryland Avenue and threatening its occupants while armed with an unspecified weapon. He was taken into custody Sunday and jailed in connection with the July 9 incident.

Oakland Oaks edge Hopwood Village, 2-1
Luke Ross led the Oakland Oaks with a strong pitching performance, carrying a shutout into the seventh inning in a 2-1 victory over Hopwood Village Plaza at Garrett College. After Hopwood scored on a two-out RBI single by Justin Berstensky, Andrew Catone entered in relief to secure the final out and earn the save.

Neighbor douses fire at South Cumberland home
A late-night fire at a home on East Fourth Street in South Cumberland was confined to the porch and quickly put out by a neighbor who used water while calling 911. Investigators deemed the cause incendiary, and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office handled the investigation.
