Hartlebury Common Local Group hosted a talk by Mike Southall and Steve Whitehouse about Worcestershire moths, highlighting the range of species found in local heathland reserves. Lead Ranger Paul Allen is scheduled to speak about Wyre Forest Nature Reserves on March 6 at Stourport Sports Club. The event is open to everyone for a £3 admission fee.

Hartlebury Common Local Group reported on a presentation by Forestry Commission ecologist Phil Rudlin about dormice in the Wyre Forest. The talk highlighted the protected species’ survival through monitoring, nest-box provision and habitat management, with lessons applicable to other dormouse habitats in Britain. The group also announced an upcoming presentation by Hannah Thomas on Worcestershire Wildlife Trust’s work and reserves.

Hartlebury Common Local Group hosted Gary Farmer, who gave an illustrated talk on grasshoppers and crickets and demonstrated how a bat detector can amplify calls beyond the range of human hearing. The group announced that Tim Selman will speak about a 50-year vision for the Wyre Forest on March 7 at Stourport Sports Club; admission is £3 and all are welcome.

Hartlebury Castle hosted a sold-out Candlemas celebration on January 30, organized by Alison Brimelow of the Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust. Guests enjoyed cider or apple juice, a candlelit medieval feast, and music from Sue Pope’s group, The Merrie Noyse. Funds raised will support the trust as it assumes responsibility for running and preserving the castle.

Hartlebury Common Local Group chair Joy Rooney discussed the common’s history, archaeological finds, changing land use and conservation efforts to restore heathland. Members will promote conservation volunteering at the Greener Living Show in Kidderminster, while Gary Farmer is scheduled to give a talk on grasshoppers and crickets in Stourport.

Bewdley Bridge Club announces the results of its December 9 pairs competition, won by Wendy Packwood and Jane Somervell. The club meets on Wednesday evenings at the Elizabeth Mills Centre in Stourport, welcomes new members and visitors, and provides contact details for further information.
