Manchester City charges: Premier League clubs 'want clarity', says Arsenal chief Richard Garlick
Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick says Premier League clubs want clarity and a speedy resolution to Manchester City's case involving more than 100 alleged financial-rule breaches. The independent commission has yet to issue a ruling more than 18 months after the hearing, while Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says the complex process must run its course. Rivals are frustrated by the delay and escalating legal costs, although City continues to spend heavily and win major trophies while the case remains unresolved. Garlick also says Arsenal is not actively seeking to sell academy products Myles Lewis-Skelly or Ethan Nwaneri, though it would consider suitable offers under new squad-spending controls, and expresses confidence that manager Mikel Arteta will sign a new contract.

Premier League chief Richard Masters says Fifa self-destructed over World Cup plan
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says FIFA damaged its own credibility by proposing to sell a 21% stake in a company managing the commercial and ticketing rights to its competitions, including the World Cup. He backs the English FA’s decision to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino and calls for a unity candidate to challenge him for the FIFA presidency. Masters also criticises FIFA’s handling of Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red-card suspension, defends Chelsea’s relatively mild financial-rule punishment, and acknowledges that Manchester City’s ruling on more than 100 alleged breaches is taking longer than expected. He remains confident that the Premier League will retain its global appeal despite major changes among its players and managers.

Fifa: Kevin Lamour sacked after criticising president Gianni Infantino
FIFA has dismissed chief operating officer Kevin Lamour less than three weeks after he publicly condemned president Gianni Infantino’s abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise plan to sell a 21% stake in a company managing FIFA competitions’ commercial and ticketing rights. FIFA said it had agreed to part ways with Lamour, while he left after warning that the project reflected one person’s agenda and that the administration had been deceived. The dispute has intensified pressure on Infantino ahead of his expected bid for a fourth presidential term, with UEFA, Concacaf and several national associations withdrawing their support, although African, South American and Oceanian confederations continue to back him.

Jeff Bezos: Amazon founder part of consortium that agrees to buy into Liverpool
Fenway Sports Group has agreed to sell about 30% of Liverpool to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by Amit Bhatia and including Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin. FSG will retain majority ownership and operational control, while Bhatia is expected to become vice-chairman subject to regulatory approval. The deal reportedly values Liverpool at £5bn-£6bn and could give the consortium a future path to majority ownership, although no sale commitment has been made. The investment will not create a separate transfer budget. FSG is attracted by the consortium's global business and investment reach, while supporters have questioned whether the deal is a trophy purchase and expressed concerns about Bezos's record at Amazon. The transaction follows substantial growth in Liverpool's value and revenues under FSG.

Golf: LIV golfers told season-ending team event set to be cancelled
LIV Golf players have reportedly been told that the season-ending Team Championship in Michigan is likely to be cancelled, with tickets no longer available and the league yet to issue an official announcement. The Indiana event scheduled for 23 August may therefore be LIV’s final tournament of 2026. The uncertainty follows the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s decision to end its funding, although LIV says it has secured an unnamed lead investor for 2027 and plans to reduce its schedule to 10 events. Jon Rahm’s future is also in doubt, while the DP World Tour is warning LIV players that they may face fines and suspensions if they continue in the league without releases.

Gianni Infantino: Uefa says Fifa's backing of its president 'changes nothing'
UEFA says FIFA's apology and backing for Gianni Infantino do not resolve its concerns over the abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise plan to attract private investment into major competitions, including the men's and women's World Cups. The English FA has withdrawn its support, while CONMEBOL, the Confederation of African Football, and several national associations continue to back Infantino. UEFA wants answers about who developed the proposal, whether a competitive process was followed, and whether Infantino could have benefited personally. Its options include seeking an emergency FIFA Council meeting, launching a no-confidence vote, supporting a rival candidate such as Victor Montagliani, or boycotting competitions. However, UEFA appears short of the votes needed to remove Infantino, who is expected to contest next March's presidential election and may use forthcoming funding announcements to rebuild support.

Gianni Infantino: Opponents threaten 'non-co-operation' with Fifa
Opponents of FIFA president Gianni Infantino are threatening non-co-operation unless he steps down, escalating a dispute over his abandoned plan to allow private investors to buy minority stakes in a new commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise. UEFA is considering legal action and has demanded that FIFA preserve documents related to the proposal, while several national associations, including Wales, Serbia, Sweden and Finland, have withdrawn their support for Infantino's re-election. Infantino still retains backing in parts of Africa, South America and Asia, but the rebellion could lead to an emergency FIFA Council meeting or a broader challenge to his bid for a final term.

World Cup 2026: President Donald Trump questions Harry Kane's defensive role for England
Donald Trump criticised England’s use of Harry Kane in a defensive role during their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, adding to scrutiny of Thomas Tuchel’s tactics. Trump also reignited controversy by praising Gianni Infantino for suspending Folarin Balogun’s red-card ban, intensifying concerns over political influence on FIFA decisions. Infantino defended the tournament’s success despite issues including high costs, expanded match breaks and visa problems. The Balogun case continues to raise questions over FIFA’s independence as Infantino remains poised for re-election.
