An inquest heard that 45-year-old Neil Thompson died from aspiration of blood caused by traumatic facial injuries and a traumatic head injury after being found at Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton on January 19, 2026. Coroner Joanne Lees recorded a narrative conclusion that the circumstances of the injuries remained unknown.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust kept the discovery confidential until the young animal was safely observed above ground, noting its vulnerability to predators. The beavers are believed to have originated from illegal releases, but the healthy kit indicates the habitat is suitable for the species’ return. Only one kit has been spotted so far. The finding coincides with wider conservation initiatives, including a fenced enclosure planned at Craddocks Moss and future licensed wild reintroductions that could see up to 50 beavers reintroduced across Staffordshire. The species is expected to aid habitat restoration and water management as part of long-term ecological recovery efforts.
