Northumberland A1 dualling PM comments spark new optimism
Comments by Prime Minister Andy Burnham have renewed hopes that the proposed dualling of the A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham in Northumberland could be reconsidered. The 13-mile scheme was cancelled in 2024 because its estimated £500m cost was judged unaffordable, following decades of campaigning and a series of crashes that killed six people. Burnham said officials would explore alternative funding with North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, while Northumberland County Council is spending £20,000 to gather evidence. Local political leaders welcomed the change in tone but stressed that concrete funding and action are needed. National Highways is also considering targeted safety improvements as part of the 2026–2031 road investment programme.

Newcastle Late Night Levy could be dropped by council
Newcastle City Council is considering abolishing its Late Night Levy, an annual charge of £299 to £4,400 on businesses selling alcohol between midnight and 06:00. The levy has raised £3.46m since 2013 for street marshals, CCTV and other night-time safety services, but 93% of licensed businesses consulted supported scrapping it because of rising costs and its disproportionate effect on some venues. A licensing committee will consider the proposal before a final council decision in October. If abolished, a replacement safety fund would be financed by the council and Newcastle Business Improvement District company NE1.

MP backs Newcastle mum's bid to keep son's killer behind bars
Kemi Badenoch has backed Katherine Errington's campaign to prevent Reece Galbraith, who received a 14-year sentence for manslaughter after a 2024 illegal-drugs-lab explosion killed seven-year-old Archie York in Newcastle's Benwell area, from being released early. More than 3,000 people have signed Errington's petition calling for people convicted of manslaughter and serious child abuse or neglect to be excluded from early-release eligibility. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a review of sentencing changes and plans to increase prison capacity, including faster removal of foreign national offenders, with the aim of limiting early release for the most serious offenders. The policy debate has intensified over the potential early release of two men convicted in the death of PC Andrew Harper.

“Time is of the essence” in North East plastic nurdle clean-up
Tonnes of plastic nurdles have washed onto beaches across North East England after the vessel Wind Orca collided with the berthed container ship BG Orange at the Port of Tyne on 19 July. Wind Orca owner Cadeler admitted that its response had not met community expectations and deployed specialist contractors to work with councils and volunteers. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness welcomed the increased effort but said the pellets were deeply embedded in sand, continued to wash ashore and could require a prolonged clean-up. She argued that the companies responsible should pay for the operation. A floating barrier has been installed around BG Orange to help prevent further spills.

Former Newcastle councillor Thom Campion spared jail over sexual assault
A former Newcastle councillor, Thom Campion, received an 11‑month suspended sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at his home in March 2023. The court heard that he pinned the victim down, assaulted her and ignored her attempts to resist. Judge Paul Currer called the attack terrifying and criticised Campion’s denial of the offence. Campion, who previously served as a Liberal Democrat councillor before becoming an Independent, must complete unpaid work, attend rehabilitation sessions, pay costs, is subject to a restraining order, and will be on the sex offender register for 10 years.

North East bus takeover £100m more than expected
Auditors found that the North East mayoral authority’s bus franchising plan had omitted £104.9m in staffing costs over 30 years, increasing projected public spending to £437.8m. Despite the error, the accountants concluded the scheme remains affordable within available funding. The authority maintains the plan offers the best value for improving the region’s bus network. The audit committee chair called for a detailed workshop later in the year, and the first Angel Network buses are expected to begin operating in 2029.

Road under Gateshead flyover in no condition to reopen, council says
Gateshead Council says the road beneath the A167 flyover will remain closed after the structure is demolished, as it will be unfit for reopening due to the scale of works required. The authority emphasized that no decision has been made on the road’s long‑term future amid broader plans to redesign the town centre’s road network and support regeneration. Former council leader Martin Gannon previously warned any replacement road would have reduced capacity, while new leader Nick Allan has expressed interest in improving access routes and encouraging economic growth.

Gateshead flyover demolition sees roundabout closure from 25 July
Gateshead’s Park Lane roundabout will close from 25 July until 21 August as part of the ongoing demolition of the unsafe Gateshead Flyover. Officials warn of severe disruption, advising commuters to avoid the town centre and instead use major routes such as the A1, A19 and Tyne Tunnel. The closure, deemed the most complex phase of the project, is scheduled during school holidays and will involve 24‑hour work. A diversion will be in place but is not designed for usual traffic volumes. Demolition of the flyover, shut in December 2024, is expected to finish later this year.

Plans to demolish vandal‑hit Newcastle rehearsal hall backed
Newcastle City Council approved revised plans to demolish the derelict Sinfonia House in Jesmond Vale after years of disuse, vandalism and a suspected arson attack. The updated proposal includes improved security measures and landscaping with soil and wildflower seeding. Local councillors expressed dissatisfaction over the building’s deterioration but agreed demolition is the only viable option given its condition and recent anti‑social behaviour concerns.

Tyne and Wear Metro ticket office to be turned into mini museum
A disused Tyne and Wear Metro ticket office at Newcastle’s Monument station will be converted into a pop‑up museum showcasing the network’s history, featuring archive photographs and images of original and modern trains. The move follows commemorative runs of the retired 599 trains. Nexus says final preparations are under way, with an opening date yet to be confirmed. Plans for a micropub on the site approved in 2019 were abandoned during the pandemic.
