Faster Alzheimer's decline linked to common pill taken by millions
Research from the University of Florida suggests that glucosamine use may be associated with faster Alzheimer’s progression. Among people with mild cognitive impairment, users had a 25% higher likelihood of later developing dementia, while those with existing dementia had a 25% higher risk of death during the study period. Mouse experiments and analysis of human brain tissue pointed to excessive sugar-tagging activity in the brain as a possible mechanism. The findings do not prove that glucosamine causes dementia, and people taking the supplement are advised to consult their GP before stopping.
