Hot weather brings full beer gardens and bumper trade

The Fat Badger Group reported one of its strongest summers, while City Cruises York saw July trade rise 31% year on year and the Fox Inn reported a 25% increase. Businesses with outdoor areas have benefited, but historic buildings create difficulties for air conditioning, staff comfort and customer welfare. Hospitality operators are expanding shaded seating, ventilation, cooling equipment and heat-related welfare measures, while York BID says extreme heat is hurting retail and creating challenging conditions in kitchens and other buildings. Stakeholders expect hotter summers to become more common and are calling for clearer, more flexible planning rules that protect York’s heritage while allowing businesses to adapt.
