RNLI workers on strike over Isle of Wight redundancy dispute
Workers at the RNLI's inshore lifeboat manufacturing centre in East Cowes have begun striking over redundancy terms after the charity announced that production would move to Poole by the end of 2027, closing the Isle of Wight site. Unite says relocating workers is financially and personally impractical and is demanding a fairer package, while local councillor Karl Love warns of damage to the island's workforce, suppliers and businesses. The RNLI says the East Cowes facility needs more than £5m of investment and that Poole is better equipped for future production. It disputes claims that workers will receive no support, citing voluntary redundancy, redeployment, relocation assistance, career transition support and guaranteed Poole roles. Further strikes are planned for 19 and 25 August.
