Man jailed after disorder died by suicide following racism accusation, jury finds
An inquest jury found that Peter Lynch, who was jailed for his role in violent disorder outside an asylum seeker hotel in Manvers, died by suicide in his HMP Moorland cell on October 19 2024. The jury concluded that information about an impending prison adjudication over alleged racist comments, combined with Lynch’s belief that he was defenceless and unable to protect his family, children or others, led to his death. The coroner raised concerns about how prisoners are informed before adjudications and about delays and confusion in responding to an unresponsive prisoner; the prison said both issues had been addressed.
