Scotland’s expanding pipeline of pumped storage hydro projects could make the country a major energy battery for the UK by storing surplus renewable electricity and releasing it during periods of high demand. The opportunity is strengthened by Ofgem’s provisional support for three Scottish schemes under the Long Duration Electricity Storage cap-and-floor framework, but achieving it will require coordinated development, skilled workers, resilient supply chains, substantial grid investment and meaningful benefits for local communities.
