Record 128 migrants make perilous journey to UK in small boat
A record 128 migrants crossed the English Channel in a single small boat, contributing to a total of 225 arrivals via three vessels on the same day, according to Home Office data. Despite the record number per boat, overall crossings for the first half of the year fell by 41 percent compared with the same period last year. The decline is attributed to factors including weather, parts supply, migration flows into Europe and government measures. The UK has agreed to pay £662 million to France for expanded beach patrols, while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is pursuing asylum system reforms aimed at deterring crossings and facilitating deportations. The average number of migrants per boat has risen to a new high of 65 for January through June.
