Andy Burnham shares plans that will see Cambridgeshire mayor keep more local taxes
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to let England’s regional mayors retain a share of locally collected income tax and business rates for investment in priorities such as transport, infrastructure, housing and skills. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has been designated an Established Mayoral Strategic Authority, strengthening its ability to request further devolved powers and funding flexibility. Mayor Paul Bristow welcomed the move but said the details would be important. Mayors will not be permitted to issue local tax rebates, while an equalisation system will continue supporting areas that collect less tax. Further details, including the proportion of taxes mayors can retain, are expected in an autumn white paper, alongside proposals for regional tourist taxes and more consistent administrative boundaries.
