How dairy data helps farmers tackle River Cleddau pollution
Dozens of Pembrokeshire dairy farmers supplying First Milk are using farm nutrient data and satellite mapping to match fertiliser and feed inputs to the needs of their land and livestock. A Lancaster University-led study found that farms in the Cleddau catchment generated an annual phosphorus surplus of about 360 tonnes, contributing to algae growth and reduced oxygen levels in rivers. Researchers said more efficient use of manure and slurry could replace some artificial fertiliser and save farms a combined £1.08 million annually. Participating farmers are adjusting spreading practices and reporting progress each year, while MP Henry Tufnell said the model could help farmers nationally cut costs and protect waterways.
