Hull pub raises more than £12,800 for mental health charity following ‘biggest yet’ DazFest
The Cross Keys pub in Hull raised £12,849 for mental-health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) through its largest DazFest fundraiser to date. Latest Heatwave’s Impact on East Yorkshire Wildlife as Water Voles Struggle
The fifth heatwave of 2026 and the driest July on record have severely affected wildlife across Yorkshire. Poignant tribute to Arctic Corsair volunteer whose ashes are sailing with the vessel on voyage to her final home

Community outdoor space in Hull left scarred by fire
A communal green space near Plowden Road in west Hull has been badly scorched, with about 50 square metres of grassland, trees and plants damaged in a fire on August 9. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the blaze within minutes and classified it as deliberate ignition. Residents fear the fire could have spread through the dry grass to nearby wooden fences, and one resident has asked Emma Hardy MP and Hull City Council to consider installing gated access to deter antisocial behaviour.

‘Extremely rare’ coin unearthed by East Yorkshire metal detectorist sells for £1,200
A Henry I PAXS-type penny discovered by a metal detectorist in East Yorkshire sold for £1,200 at a Tennants Auctioneers sale, exceeding its £400–£600 estimate. The York Mint coin is believed to date from the early 12th century and is considered the first known example of this type associated with the moneyer Edwine. A launch party will take place at Atom Bar Hull on 26 August, with Tropic’ull available in cans and on draught alongside other alcoholic and low-alcohol options. The founders hope its local identity and alcohol-free offering will appeal to designated drivers, pregnant people and others seeking alternatives to alcohol, while supporting social connection and wellbeing.

East Yorkshire grassroots football club celebrates long-held dream of opening new clubhouse
Hessle Rangers has opened a new £650,000 clubhouse at Bilsdon Park, fulfilling a 50-year ambition for founders Peter and Janet Bilsdon. Pupils at Bridlington's Quay Academy have created masks, self-portraits, mixed-media collages, costumes and printmaking as part of the National Gallery's Take One Picture programme. Inspired partly by Pablo Picasso and the artwork The Muse, Calliope, the project explored identity, emotions and the meaning of masks, with some pupils using recycled materials. The school has been named a finalist for the third time, giving its work the possibility of being displayed at the National Gallery in London.

How grapefruits and experts at The Deep in Hull are helping to save rare aquatic insect
The Deep in Hull is working with Forestry England, the Species Recovery Trust and Dipterist Forum to support the recovery of the critically threatened Barred Green Colonel soldierfly, found at only one known UK site in Dalby Forest. The Deep is monitoring water levels, water quality and larval populations using grapefruit skins, with surveys recording increasing numbers of larvae and the emergence of adult insects. The project aims to improve understanding of the species’ specialized spring and seepage habitat, supported by targeted grazing, scrub control and rush cutting. Funding from Natural England’s Species Recovery Fund will enable further surveys and conservation work through 2026, with possible future rearing and translocation to suitable sites.

One of ‘biggest and best’ festivals for the curious returns to bring Hull history to life

‘Hullywood here we come!’ – Praise for East Yorkshire businesses in supporting new film project
A locally produced psychological thriller, Is Anybody There?, will premiere at Parkway Cinema in Beverley on August 9. Road closure planned while traffic calming measures are installed on west Hull street
Hull City Council will install a priority chicane, a 20mph zone and improved pedestrian crossing facilities on Meadowbank Road in west Hull. The road will be fully closed from August 10 to September 9, 2026, with vehicles diverted via Cardigan Road and Roslyn Road while access for residents, waste collections, emergency vehicles and pedestrians is maintained. The scheme, funded through local ward budgets following residents’ concerns, is intended to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and other road users.

Hull businessman Rob Gibson has died suddenly at the age of 50 after surgery to remove an adrenal tumour. Gibson, who ran the Hull Signs Express franchise for 24 years, had survived multiple major medical emergencies, including a brain aneurysm rupture and stroke, kidney removal and complications linked to vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS). His sister Sarah Dawson said doctors had called him a “walking miracle” because of his extensive surgical history. He died shortly after speaking to an ICU nurse following the successful tumour operation, and the cause of death may take months to establish. Family, friends and Hessle Rangers paid tribute to him, while donations are being requested for Annabelle’s Challenge, a charity supporting people with vEDS.

John Turnbull, a well-known Hull newsagent and family businessman, has died aged 86 after living with dementia for several years. His son Alexander described him as a best friend and hero, while former employees and family members recalled his warmth, humour, strong work ethic and commitment to treating staff equally. Hundreds attended his funeral at Haltemprice Crematorium on July 27. Turnbull opened his first shop in Spring Bank West in 1967 and built a chain of newsagents and convenience stores known for its loyal workforce. Pat celebrates her 100th by being reunited with artwork she created more than 70 years ago
Pat Mackrill celebrated her 100th birthday with a visit to Hull Guildhall, where she was reunited with paintings she created in the 1950s and tapestries designed in the 1990s. The artwork, commissioned by Hull City Council, includes scenes depicting Charles I being refused entry to Hull and a 20-panel history of the city. Accompanied by family and welcomed by Lady Mayoress Maria Coward, Pat toured the displays and enjoyed afternoon tea. A lifelong artist who also contributed work to the 1951 Festival of Britain, she credited doing what she loved—painting—with helping her live a long life.

Charity rugby match to help causes inspired by poorly Hull baby Otto
A charity rugby match at Hull Wyke on July 25 will raise money for Life For A Kid, Krabbe UK and Martin House Hospice, inspired by eight-month-old Otto Sparkes, who has the rare and fatal condition Krabbe leukodystrophy. Otto’s parents, Ella Burton and Keiron Sparkes, are using the event and other fundraising efforts to support charities while creating positive memories for their family.
