BBC uncovers evidence that South African security officials killed a senior police investigator
An investigation by BBC Eye found police and court evidence linking members of South Africa’s special forces to the abduction and alleged killing of Ethiopian national Abdella Abadigga, as well as the 2023 shooting of senior Hawks investigator Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa. Vehicles connected to both incidents were registered to Peters Communications Trust, a company described as a covert special-forces entity, and one suspect was reportedly identified near both crime scenes. Twelve soldiers, including senior commanders, have been charged with offenses including abduction, murder, fraud and obstructing investigations, but all deny the allegations. Several failed to surrender after bail was revoked, while some remain in service and one was promoted. No trial date has been set, Abadigga’s body has not been found, and Mathipa’s family continues to demand justice.
