Hull Maritime Museum promises a feast for history lovers - in pictures
A photo gallery previews Hull Maritime Museum’s reopening on August 8 after more than six and a half years of closure. The refurbished museum will display about 1,300 objects, including returning favourites such as Erik the Polar Bear and a 119-year-old North Atlantic right whale skeleton, while adding a planetarium, scrimshaw collection, public-selected objects, interactive exhibits and a dome-level city view. The redevelopment forms part of Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime Project, funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, alongside improvements to other maritime attractions and public spaces.

Former Hull train driver celebrates his 100th birthday
Bob Stainthorp is celebrating his 100th birthday in Hull after a railway career lasting nearly 50 years. Born in Whitby, he joined the railway at 16 as an engine cleaner, spent more than 20 years as a fireman, and later became a driver, working routes across Yorkshire and beyond while witnessing the transition from steam to diesel. After retiring in 1990, he helped railway enthusiasts restore Black 5 locomotive 5305 and later drove it back to Hull with ten coaches. Stainthorp credits his family, simple habits, baking and crafts for helping him reach the milestone, and remains interested in trains, planes and local videos through YouTube and Flightradar.
