North Yorkshire mayor welcomes government disposable BBQ ban
North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith welcomed the UK government’s temporary ban on disposable barbecues in England, Scotland and Wales during a period of hot, dry weather and elevated wildfire risk. He cited the severe damage caused by last year’s Langdale Moor fire and called for retailers in York and North Yorkshire to stop selling disposable barbecues permanently. Crews called out near Clifford's Tower, York, in 'hoax call'
Two fire crews from York and Acomb were called to Tower Street near Clifford’s Tower after a report of a tree on fire with young people in it. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service searched the area but found neither a fire nor anyone in a tree, concluding that the report was probably a hoax call.

Person trapped after two-vehicle crash in Sutton Road, York
A person was injured and trapped in a vehicle after a two-vehicle crash on Sutton Road in Wigginton, York. Firefighters from York and Huntington cut the occupant free using hydraulic equipment before handing them over to ambulance crews. Firefighters also monitored the second vehicle because it was electric.

Northern warns of disruption as highs of 33C forecast
Northern expects extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 33C, to affect rail reliability through York and across parts of Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and the North West. The operator plans to run fewer trains between York and Leeds via Harrogate on Thursday, August 13, warning that journeys may take longer and some services may be cancelled. Passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling, while affected tickets can be used on specified alternative Northern, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Trains, London Northwestern and LNER services. Northern customers unable to travel because of the weather may also use their tickets on Friday or Saturday.

Hedge fire spreads to farm building in Yorkshire town
A hedge fire spread to a derelict farm building on Bishopdyke Road in Sherburn in Elmet, near Selby, North Yorkshire. Firefighters were called shortly before 3:40 p.m. on Monday, August 10, and reported that the blaze measured 15 by 5 metres and caused less than 10% damage to the building. The fire was deemed accidental and was extinguished using hose-reel jets and a thermal imaging camera.

Two vehicles crash on A19 near Thirsk - crews called in
Two vehicles crashed on the A19 at Bridforth near Thirsk shortly before 11:10 a.m. on Monday, August 10. Everyone had exited the vehicles before firefighters arrived. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service made the scene safe and moved one vehicle, then left the incident with police and a recovery company.

Amber heat health alert for York after 33C forecast
An amber heat health alert has been issued for York from Tuesday to Friday as temperatures are forecast to rise from 23C to 33C before cooling. The UK Health Security Agency warns of significant impacts on health and social care services and advises people to stay hydrated, avoid the hottest part of the day, keep indoor spaces cool and check on vulnerable people. Dry conditions are expected to avoid the need for a rare amber or red dangerous-heat alert from the Met Office, while clear skies may allow viewing of an historic solar eclipse. Large field fire on Yorkshire coast - firefighters on scene
Six fire crews from across North and East Yorkshire responded to a large fire in a stubble field in Hunmanby, near Filey. Firefighters and farmers worked together to surround and control the blaze, which spread to several bale stacks. The incident followed another large field fire near Malton the previous night, where farm machinery was used to create fire breaks.

Rehab facility opens new building in Yorkshire coastal town

York train carriage evacuated at station after smoke seen
A train carriage at York railway station was evacuated after smoke was reported onboard shortly after 3:50 p.m. Firefighters from Acomb and York found a minor area of smoke in a toilet, isolated the carriage’s power and declared the area safe. No injuries were reported.

Dozens of Georgians parade through York as festival returns
Dozens of Georgian-period reenactors and festival attendees paraded from Clifford’s Tower to York Mansion House, where dancers performed Regency dances in St Helen’s Square ahead of a masquerade ball. Visitors praised the experience of wearing historic clothing and the welcoming atmosphere, while organizers reported high attendance at the Mansion House and related events. The festival also featured talks, tours, performances and discussions of Georgian history, including Anne Lister, women and the justice system, and correspondence between Ignatius Sancho and Laurence Sterne.

Fire closes streets in Scarborough - crews on scene

Knifeman detained after threats made in Yorkshire town
A man reportedly carrying a knife and threatening to harm himself and others was arrested at a property in the Langthorpe area of Boroughbridge. After assessment by a mental health professional, he was detained under the Mental Health Act and transferred to hospital for treatment and support. Delays for York train passengers due to fire on line
A fire between Huddersfield and Leeds caused delays, cancellations and diversions for passengers travelling to York, with trains operating at reduced speeds. TransPennine Express expected disruption to continue until 12:45 p.m. and allowed passengers with cancelled services to use TransPennine Express, Northern or LNER trains within a two-hour window. The disruption followed a second day of rail problems caused by a power outage across the Midlands and north-west England, although Network Rail said most operators were returning to full service.

Out-of-control dog bites two people in Yorkshire
Two people suffered minor injuries after being bitten by an out-of-control dog in East Ayton near Scarborough. North Yorkshire Police used a taser to safely contain the dog, which was taken to secure kennels and reported to be fit and uninjured. Police said there was no ongoing risk to the wider public, while the owner is assisting the investigation and witnesses are being asked to contact police.
