The Image of Streetwalkers in Itzik Manger’s and Debora Vogel’s Ballads

18 Apr 2024  |  ingeveb.org
The article explores the evolution of the ballad genre in Yiddish literature, focusing on the portrayal of streetwalkers in the works of Itzik Manger and Debora Vogel. It discusses how both poets integrated Eastern European folklore and interwar popular Jewish culture into their ballads, using the character of the prostitute to discuss gender and sexuality and to subvert the ballad genre. The analysis highlights the transition from Manger's early mystical and aestheticized approach to tragedy to his later incorporation of shund elements, and Vogel's use of theatricality and intertextual references to modernize the ballad. The article also examines the poets' treatment of female embodiment and gendered experience in modernity.

In Search of “Berlin Grandfathers”: An Interview with Arndt Beck and Ella Ponizovsky-Bergelson

04 Apr 2024  |  ingeveb.org
Arndt Beck and Ella Ponizovsky-Bergelson discuss their paths to Yiddish and its influence on their artwork. Beck's journey began with meeting native Yiddish speakers and inheriting works from Helmut Psotta, while Ponizovsky-Bergelson's interest stemmed from her family roots, particularly her grandfather Dovid Bergelson. They explore the impact of Bergelson's repression and execution on their family history. Their art, which often incorporates Yiddish, aims to bring the language into a contemporary context, challenging its black and white image. The interview also touches on their collaborative exhibition, which showcased the multifaceted Yiddish culture in Berlin. Beck is also a translator, focusing on the works of Avrom Sutzkever, and both artists continue to engage in projects that connect the past with the present through language and art.

Frequency Criterion for the Existence of Sliding Processes in Control Systems with an Arbitrary Variable Structure

14 Mar 2024  |  MDPI
The article presents a frequency criterion for the existence of sliding processes in control systems with variable structures. It demonstrates that the conditions for the existence of slip are equivalent to the conditions for the absolute stability of equivalent circuits of the original systems. The authors propose this as an alternative to phase trajectories and state space equations. The main conclusions are supported by simulations of processes in systems with variable structures and equivalent circuits.

Removal of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid from Aqueous Solutions Using Al2O3/Graphene Oxide Granules Prepared by Spray-Drying Method

11 Mar 2024  |  MDPI
Aluminum oxide granules with 0.25% graphene oxide were prepared using a spray-drying method to create an adsorbent for removing the herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent's effectiveness was confirmed through various spectroscopic techniques. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 35.181 mg/g. The study highlights the potential of Al2O3-0.25%vol. GO powder for producing effective adsorbents for toxic herbicides, emphasizing the role of pH in adsorption efficiency.

Epigenomic Profiling Advises Therapeutic Potential of Leukotriene Receptor Inhibitors for a Subset of Triple-Negative Breast Tumors

11 Dec 2023  |  MDPI
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with poor survival rates, and chemotherapy has been the primary treatment. Genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation identified a subset of TNBC samples with significant hypomethylation at the LTB4R/LTB4R2 genes' CpG islands, suggesting potential upregulation of these genes. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed poorer overall survival for TNBC patients with upregulated LTB4R. The study assessed the therapeutic effects of various drugs, including leukotriene receptor inhibitors, on TNBC cell lines with hypomethylated and upregulated LTB4R/LTB4R2 genes. Drugs such as LY255283, Minocycline, Silibinin, Piceatannol, Mitiglinide, 1-Azakenpaullone, Carbetocin, and Pim-1-inhibitor-2 were identified as candidates for additional treatment of TNBC patients with tumors demonstrating LTB4R/LTB4R2 hypomethylation/upregulation. The findings suggest that the epigenetic status of leukotriene B4 receptors could be a novel predictive and prognostic biomarker for TNBC, potentially improving individualized therapy for TNBC patients.

Chromosomal Instability in Gastric Cancer: Role in Tumor Development, Progression, and Therapy

30 Nov 2023  |  MDPI
Gastric cancer (GC) is a prevalent malignancy with high incidence in Asia, often diagnosed at advanced stages leading to poor prognosis. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) classifies GC into four molecular subtypes, with the chromosomal instability (CIN) subtype characterized by frequent aneuploidies and structural chromosomal rearrangements. This review explores the molecular mechanisms and causes of CIN in GC, highlighting the role of TP53 gene aberrations. Patients with CIN subtype show poor survival but benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy. The review also discusses common chromosomal rearrangements, driver genes, and potential therapeutic targets for the CIN subtype of GC.

Study of Adaptation Processes in Tribofilms during Friction of Antifriction Aluminum Alloys for Journal Bearings

26 Nov 2023  |  MDPI
The study investigates the tribological behavior of experimental aluminum alloys (Al–Sn–Pb–Si–Cu–Mg–Zn) used in journal bearings, focusing on the formation and adaptation of tribofilms that reduce wear intensity during friction with steel. The research identifies eight new compounds on the friction surface, highlighting the role of non-spontaneous processes and tribochemical reactions in wear resistance. The findings suggest that magnesium and zinc precipitation from solid solutions significantly impact the wear resistance of the alloys. The study concludes that tribofilms formed during friction play a crucial role in energy dissipation and wear reduction, with implications for the development of more efficient antifriction materials.

Highly Stable Docetaxel-Loaded Nanoparticles Based on Poly(D,L-lactide)-b-Poly(ethylene glycol) for Cancer Treatment: Preparation, Characterization, and In Vitro Cytotoxicity Studies

13 May 2023  |  MDPI
The study focuses on the development and characterization of highly stable docetaxel-loaded nanoparticles based on poly(D,L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) for cancer treatment. The nanoparticles were prepared using an oil-in-water emulsion method and stabilized by poly(vinyl alcohol). The research found that nanoparticles with longer hydrophobic blocks exhibited better stability and drug loading capacity. In vitro studies demonstrated that these nanoparticles had enhanced anticancer performance compared to free docetaxel. The study also established optimal freeze-drying conditions for long-term storage and reconstitution of the nanoparticles, making them promising candidates for targeted cancer therapy.

Au Revoir to American Empire

30 Oct 2009  |  Foreign Policy
Emmanuel Todd's book 'Après l’Empire: Essai sur la décomposition du système américain' argues that the United States' military and economic dominance is more myth than reality, predicting the country's downfall due to its economic vulnerabilities and overextended military. Todd suggests that Europe, with its budding economic power and common cultural values, is the natural contender to U.S. hegemony. He advocates for Europe to abstain from overt global actions, allowing the U.S. to deteriorate while fostering closer economic ties within Europe and potentially forming alliances with Russia and Japan. Todd's predictions have already seen some validation, particularly in the context of Franco-German relations and the aftermath of the Iraq war. However, the article notes that Todd's book lacks practical solutions for restoring global balance-of-power politics.
