Venezuela’s Bungled Earthquake Response

Foreign Policy 3. Juli 2026 English

Twin earthquakes in Venezuela caused massive casualties and damage, exposing public dissatisfaction with the U.S.-backed government led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez. Slow and sometimes obstructive disaster response fueled criticism as missing-person estimates soared and international assistance, including U.N. support and U.S. military aid, increased. Political tensions resurfaced as opposition leader María Corina Machado attempted to return to assist but faced obstacles. The quakes intensified concerns over weak institutions and raised the prospect of accelerating political change, drawing historical comparisons to past disasters that precipitated democratic openings in the region.

NATO summit in Ankara will test Trump’s commitment to Europe—again

Foreign Policy 2. Juli 2026 English

NATO allies prepare for a contentious summit in Ankara as Donald Trump renews criticism of the alliance and signals potential troop reductions in Europe. Secretary-General Mark Rutte works to reassure members that commitments made last year remain on track, though questions persist over Europe’s defense capacity and the reliability of U.S. support. Ongoing conflicts involving Ukraine, Iran, and Hezbollah add urgency to alliance coordination. The U.S. reverses export restrictions on Anthropic’s latest AI models after new safeguards are implemented, highlighting frictions in trans-Atlantic tech policy. Indirect U.S.-Iran talks in Doha produce limited progress, and regional tensions remain high as related conflicts and cease-fires evolve.

Is Sports Diplomacy Still Possible?

Foreign Policy 2. Juli 2026 English

Diplomats and global institutions have attempted to use the 2026 World Cup to promote soft power and international cooperation, yet the tournament has instead exposed how hard power and geopolitical tensions increasingly shape global sports. Restrictive U.S. immigration policies, military actions, and selective enforcement by FIFA have undermined efforts at neutrality and sports diplomacy. Incidents involving Iran, Russian athletes, and political symbolism highlight the limits of soft power in an era of rising conflict and authoritarianism. Despite these challenges, cross-cultural moments and individual expressions within the tournament show that sports diplomacy still retains the capacity to build connections, even as its influence is constrained by modern political realities.

Russia Hammers Kyiv With Deadly Missile and Drone Attack

Foreign Policy 2. Juli 2026 English

Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv killed at least 21 people and injured more than 90 in an 11‑hour attack carried out in retaliation for recent Ukrainian long‑range strikes on Russian infrastructure. The bombardment damaged dozens of sites across the city, including residential buildings, while Kremlin officials denied targeting civilians. Ukraine’s recent attacks on oil and energy facilities have intensified Russia’s response, as Kyiv seeks to pressure Moscow by disrupting military supply routes. President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to urge Western leaders for increased air defense support at the upcoming NATO summit.

After 250 Years, America Is Both Glowing and Decaying

Foreign Policy 2. Juli 2026 English

America’s 250th birthday highlights a tension between national vibrancy and political decay, with widening inequality, declining governance, and eroding global credibility. Despite ongoing cultural and technological strength, the United States is increasingly viewed abroad as unreliable, allowing China and other powers to fill strategic space. Foreign observers describe a fragmented international order shaped by declining U.S. leadership, rising Chinese influence, and shifting regional alignments. Public distrust, political corruption, and internal division contrast with the country’s enduring resilience and capacity for renewal. The narrative concludes that the American experiment remains unfinished, defined by repeated cycles of struggle, reinvention, and aspiration toward its founding ideals.

The Strategy Behind the Battle for Crimea

Foreign Policy 2. Juli 2026 English

Ukrainian forces are isolating Crimea by destroying key supply routes, targeting the Kerch Bridge, crippling coastal highways, and disrupting maritime and rail logistics. Drone strikes have caused fuel and ammunition shortages across occupied southern Ukraine, while attacks on energy infrastructure have triggered blackouts and unrest in Crimea. The strategy aims to degrade Russia’s military capabilities, force costly defensive reallocations, and create conditions for a future Ukrainian counteroffensive. By threatening Russia’s key logistics hub and naval base, Ukraine is undermining Moscow’s ability to project power in the Black Sea and challenging the security narrative surrounding the 2014 annexation.

Trans-Atlanticism Isn’t Dead—It’s Being Renegotiated

Foreign Policy 1. Juli 2026 English

Argues that trans-Atlanticism is undergoing a structural renegotiation rather than decline, driven by diverging U.S. and European threat perceptions, rising far-right politics, and shifting economic and security interests. Despite political strains, Europe has increased defense spending to historic levels and is becoming more strategically autonomous. The article calls for reforms in European defense procurement, U.S. acceptance of European autonomy, clearer burden-sharing arrangements, and a new trans-Atlantic defense technology compact. Sustaining the partnership will depend on managing a transition to a more balanced, durable alliance suited to contemporary geopolitical realities.

As the Tide Turns Against Putin, Beware the Drowning Man

Foreign Policy 25. Juni 2026 English

Russia’s battlefield losses, soaring casualties, and severe economic strain have eroded domestic support for Vladimir Putin as Ukrainian long-range drone strikes increasingly hit targets deep inside Russia. The Kremlin faces mounting internal discontent from business elites, military bloggers, and ordinary citizens as infrastructure damage, fuel shortages, and warning signs across multiple economic sectors intensify pressure. Putin’s political isolation and fear of weakening control increase the likelihood of further escalation, including hybrid operations, sabotage, and nuclear signaling. With no viable strategic off-ramp and reliance on war spending to sustain the economy, Putin is expected to respond to worsening conditions by broadening confrontations abroad and tightening control at home, making the coming months especially volatile.

Micro‑influencers in influencer marketing: why parasocial connection persuades more than reach

Vc 2. März 2026 Russian

Micro‑influencers increasingly outperform large bloggers in influencer marketing due to stronger parasocial connections that create trust and emotional closeness. Research shows that persuasion depends less on follower count and more on the quality of the relationship between creator and audience. Micro‑influencers generate deeper engagement, more meaningful dialogue and higher perceived authenticity, making them valuable for both small and large brands seeking long‑term loyalty. Large influencers remain useful for reach‑driven campaigns, but brands increasingly combine high‑reach creators with micro‑influencers to balance scale and depth.
