Tourist spots across Europe hit by wildfires as Greece warns of toxic smoke
Firefighters across Portugal, Greece and Spain are battling major wildfires that have burned tens of thousands of acres and forced evacuations. Portugal’s Vouzela region saw more than 1,200 firefighters deployed as international reinforcements arrived from Spain and Italy. Toxic smoke from a recycling plant fire prompted authorities in Thessaloniki to urge residents to stay indoors, while another major blaze west of Athens required hundreds of personnel and aircraft. In Spain’s Girona region, a fast‑spreading fire has consumed thousands of hectares. Greek officials report that most fires in the country result from negligence, and the government is increasing its use of satellite technology to detect outbreaks earlier. The region continues to face widespread wildfire risk amid hot, dry conditions.
