These polymers demonstrated significant nitrogen adsorption and high BET surface areas. Six polymers were soluble in quinoline, allowing for the creation of self-standing films to assess gas separation properties. Spirobifluorene-based polymers showed the highest gas permeability, nearing the performance of PIM-1 and approaching the 2008 Robeson upper bounds for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4. Ageing studies indicated a decrease in permeability but an increase in selectivity. Temperature variation tests revealed enhanced permeability for most gases except CO2, with decreased selectivity due to drops in diffusivity and solubility selectivity. The study highlights the potential of tetraoxidethianthrene-based PIMs for gas separation membranes, offering significantly higher permeability than common polysulfones.
