Dibenzomethanopentacene-Based Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity for Use in Gas-Separation Membranes

07 Sep 2024  |  Wiley Online Library
The study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of dibenzomethanopentacene (DBMP)-based polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) for gas-separation membranes. The DBMP monomer was synthesized and incorporated into various copolymers, which were then analyzed for their physical properties, gas permeability, and selectivity. The results showed that even small amounts of DBMP significantly enhance gas permeability and selectivity. The study also found that the incorporation of DBMP units slows the physical aging of the films, making them more stable over time. The potential applications of these membranes include biogas upgrading and CO2 capture from flue gas.

Elisa Esposito, the teacher who teaches how to speak in cursive

24 Sep 2022  |  www.lastampa.it
Elisa Esposito, born on July 24, 2002, in Milan, has gained significant popularity on TikTok by teaching a unique way of speaking in 'cursive,' characterized by a specific Milanese cadence. Her videos, marked by humor and lightness, have attracted nearly a million followers. Elisa shares her reading preferences, including her favorite childhood book 'Geronimo Stilton,' and her admiration for the 'After' series by Anna Todd. Despite her online fame, she maintains a modest personal library and prefers reading in the evening. She believes that TikTok and books serve different purposes and notes that young people read less due to time constraints.

SGA considers mandating fish bowl helmets instead of face masks

01 Apr 2021  |  The Johns Hopkins News-Letter
Daniel Grumpf, a sixth-year student, proposed to the Student Government Association (SGA) the idea of mandating fish bowls instead of face masks on campus. The proposal, presented humorously with a PowerPoint and ukulele melody, received mixed reactions from SGA members. Concerns were raised about the scientific validity, potential health risks, and the exclusion of international students. Despite the creative pitch, no one sponsored the bill, and it was not considered further.

Synthesis and gas permeation properties of tetraoxidethianthrene-based polymers of intrinsic microporosity

01 Jan 2021  |  pubs.rsc.org
Nine polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) derived from bis-catechol monomers and tetraoxidethianthrene were synthesized and evaluated for gas separation membrane applications. These polymers demonstrated significant nitrogen adsorption and high BET surface areas. Six polymers were soluble in quinoline, allowing for the creation of self-standing films to assess gas separation properties. Spirobifluorene-based polymers showed the highest gas permeability, nearing the performance of PIM-1 and approaching the 2008 Robeson upper bounds for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4. Ageing studies indicated a decrease in permeability but an increase in selectivity. Temperature variation tests revealed enhanced permeability for most gases except CO2, with decreased selectivity due to drops in diffusivity and solubility selectivity. The study highlights the potential of tetraoxidethianthrene-based PIMs for gas separation membranes, offering significantly higher permeability than common polysulfones.

Simultaneous production of biomethane and food grade CO2 from biogas: an industrial case study

01 Jan 2019  |  pubs.rsc.org
A case study on a large-scale industrial biogas upgrading process in Northern Italy demonstrates the simultaneous purification of methane and CO2. The plant, with a digestive capacity of 400,000 tonnes of biomass per year, achieves grid-quality methane and high-purity CO2 suitable for the food and beverage industry. The study highlights the chemical and microbiological purity of the gases, meeting European standards, and evaluates the economic and energetic benefits of the process.

The secret to edtech adoption? Make it easy

07 Aug 2018  |  eCampus News
Today's college students, being digital natives, have high expectations for user experiences with technology. Schools are adopting tech tools to enhance collaboration and learning outcomes, focusing on ease of use. Key strategies include familiar interface design, seamless integration, and cognitive computing. These efforts aim to make digital collaboration tools intuitive and effective, benefiting both tech-savvy students and those less experienced with technology.

3 ways technology has evolved the lecture

18 Jun 2018  |  eCampus News
Interactive flat panel displays (IFPDs) are revolutionizing educational environments by enhancing collaboration and participation. They allow multiple students to interact with digital whiteboards simultaneously, facilitate remote participation, and integrate seamlessly with third-party applications like learning management systems (LMS). These advancements enable real-time feedback and collaboration, making learning more dynamic and reflective of real-world scenarios.

A highly rigid and gas selective methanopentacene-based polymer of intrinsic microporosity derived from Tröger's base polymerization

01 Jan 2018  |  pubs.rsc.org
Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are identified as promising materials for gas separation. The newly designed PIM-MP-TB, based on the rigid methanopentacene structural unit, demonstrates high selectivity for gas separations, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound for H2/CH4 and O2/N2. Despite lower gas permeability compared to other PIMs, it shows excellent selectivity for industrially relevant gas pairs, making it suitable for applications like biogas upgrading and CO2 capture. PIM-MP-TB is prepared in four simple steps from an inexpensive starting material.

On the Effects of Artificial Feeding on Bee Colony Dynamics: A Mathematical Model

30 Nov 2016  |  journals.plos.org
The article presents a mathematical model to analyze the effects of artificial feeding on bee colony dynamics. It extends existing models by incorporating artificial food variables and simulates various scenarios to demonstrate the impact of artificial diets on colony survival during periods of natural food scarcity. The model is validated with experimental data, showing good agreement with observed results and highlighting the importance of artificial feeding in maintaining colony health during dearth periods.

Former torture center becomes museum in Buenos Aires

28 Jul 2014  |  Folha de S.Paulo
The ESMA, once the largest clandestine detention center during Argentina's last civil-military dictatorship, has been transformed into a museum complex including the Museu da Memória to ensure the atrocities committed there are not forgotten. Guided tours, like the one led by Anabela, reveal the harrowing history of the site where over five thousand 'disappeared' individuals were exterminated. The article also covers the efforts of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, who seek to find their grandchildren taken during the dictatorship, and the role of the international community in bringing awareness to these human rights violations.
