Volunteers in Whitchurch, Shropshire, dressed as gnomes to deliver handmade planters to high-street shops as part of Operation Gnome, a community initiative aimed at boosting business, tourism and environmental appeal ahead of the Heart of England in Bloom competition. Led by councillor Sue Sealy and supported by local sponsors, the project has distributed 39 planters made from recycled pallets, with shopkeepers embracing the effort and tailoring planters to match their storefronts. The town council provided an electric buggy for deliveries, and residents have responded positively as preparations continue for the upcoming judging.

An inquest opened into the death of 22‑year‑old Brody Leach, who entered the River Severn near Porthill Bridge in Shrewsbury in the early hours of 26 June. His body was found the next day and identified by his father. The hearing at Shrewsbury’s Guildhall confirmed details of the incident and adjourned proceedings until 16 November. A couple from Oswestry restored a former trawler cabin they found in Maryport and transported to Shropshire, turning it into a shed now shortlisted for Shed of the Year. After three years of restoration, the Wheelhouse features nautical details and even a bed. The pair hope to win the competition’s Unique category and dedicate the win to the supportive community in Maryport.
