The country holds the sad record for the number of green activists executed in the world: in 2017, for the third consecutive year, it appeared to be the most dangerous country for land and environmental defenders, with 57 reported murders, 80% of which were in the Amazon basin.
Protecting the Amazon's forests and rivers, essential to the Earth's survival
In Brazil, deforestation is reaching record levels. In 2022, 10,573 square kilometers of vegetation were wiped off the map, a figure that surpasses the record of 9,178 square kilometers in 2021. The Bahia region is particularly disfigured due to intensive soybean cultivation, a crop primarily intended for export to Europe, particularly France. The consequences are serious for small local farmers and the environment of this northeastern state.
