Why do extreme temperatures affect women more?
Experts note that extreme heat poses higher risks for women due to hormonal fluctuations, differences in thermoregulation, and greater cardiovascular strain. Research suggests women sweat less, begin cooling at higher body temperatures, and often experience additional vulnerabilities related to menstruation, menopause, and pregnancy. Socioeconomic factors such as caregiving responsibilities and lower income further increase exposure and reduce the ability to cope with heat. Women also tend to live longer, heightening age‑related risks. Physicians highlight worsening symptoms during menstrual cycles, menopause, and late‑stage pregnancy, urging greater awareness, protective measures, and policy action to address gender‑specific heat sensitivity.

NHS app to use AI to determine which service best for patients
AI tools will be introduced into the NHS App to guide patients to appropriate care by asking diagnostic questions, forming part of a broader government‑funded technology overhaul. Trials showed reduced phone queues and increased staff time with patients. Health bodies and experts welcomed the changes but stressed confidentiality, safety and digital inclusion. Additional AI systems generating clinical notes will be deployed across several NHS trusts as part of the expanded initiative.
