Amber heat health alerts issued for Yorkshire as temperatures soar again across the country
Amber heat health alerts are in force across Yorkshire and the Humber and most of England from August 11 to August 14, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius and peak on Thursday. The heatwave is worsening the effects of an exceptionally dry summer: half of England and all of Wales are already in drought, hosepipe bans affect 23 million customers, rivers and reservoirs are running low, and farmers face poor harvests and limited livestock feed. Wildfires and heat-related deaths have also increased, while forecasters warn that any weekend rain will be insufficient to address the accumulated rainfall deficit. The extreme conditions, including record heat and more than 2,800 excess deaths earlier in the summer, are linked to climate change.
