Liverpool college U-turn leaves students 'devastated' as parents demand answers
City of Liverpool Community College cancelled its first-year A-level provision for 2026/27, telling students at enrolment after many had applied or received offers. Parents and students criticised the lack of advance notice, saying the decision caused distress on GCSE results day and left families urgently seeking alternatives. The college cited declining A-level applications, growing demand for technical and vocational courses, capacity, staffing and regional skills needs, and said it would support affected students with alternative qualifications and providers. It said existing second-year students could complete their A-levels, there would be no redundancies, and no decision had yet been made about A-level provision for 2027/28.

The Sayers treats ECHO readers still remember as 19 shops face closure

Emergency alert sent to millions of phones over wildfire threats - live updates
A UK-wide emergency alert warned residents, landowners and visitors of a very high wildfire risk and urged them to avoid disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks. The alert followed dozens of active fires, the destruction of 19 homes in Stourbridge and hundreds of satellite-detected fires during an exceptionally hot and dry period. The government temporarily withdrew disposable barbecues from sale, deployed 100 military personnel and commissioned national aerial firefighting support, while fire services continued responding to major incidents. England’s reservoir storage had fallen to 66%, nearly 14 percentage points below the seasonal average, after the country’s driest July on record. UK Government emergency alert sparks confusion across the country
Millions of people in England and Wales received UK Government emergency alerts warning of an exceptionally high wildfire risk during extreme heat. Multiple wildfires were burning across Wales, prompting evacuations, a temporary disposable-barbecue ban and the deployment of 100 military personnel. North Wales Police reported a rise in unnecessary 999 calls, while authorities urged people to report genuine fires, avoid activities that could cause ignition, keep windows and doors closed in smoky areas, and refrain from flying drones near incidents. Can You Resit A-Levels? How It Works, Timetable and Cost
Students who are unhappy with their A-level results may be able to retake their exams through a school, college, sixth form, online provider or specialist independent college. Resits generally involve course and exam fees, and students usually must wait until the following May or June because the current linear system has one exam period each year, although some previous coursework or unit marks may be carried forward. Retake rules vary by subject and exam board, with some subjects subject to attempt limits and others, including maths and English, exempt from those restrictions. Students who believe their grades were affected by marking errors can ask their school or college to request a review, but fees may apply and grades can potentially be lowered if errors are found.
