Mo's Stonex calls for use of 0% silica worktops after new HSE guidance
Mo's Stonex is urging homeowners, designers, developers and kitchen retailers to consider worktops containing 0% crystalline silica following new Health and Safety Executive guidance on engineered stone. The HSE says dry cutting is unacceptable and recommends selecting materials with the lowest silica content, using water suppression and extraction, providing respiratory protection, and conducting health surveillance. Its research found that dry fabrication can expose workers to five to ten times more respirable silica than wet methods, while inspections in 2026 led four companies to stop engineered-stone work because of serious safety failures. Mo's Stonex says its ELORĀ mineral surface range, developed by About Stones, offers a zero-silica alternative, while stressing that material choice does not replace proper dust-control measures.

Nine in 10 young people would consider an apprenticeship over university
A 2026 Enginuity survey found that 90% of young people would consider an apprenticeship instead of a university degree, while 71% of parents would encourage their children to pursue one. Affordability, avoiding student debt and the opportunity to earn while learning were the strongest motivations. Awareness of T Levels and vocational options remains limited, with regional differences showing that demand is not always matched by effective school careers guidance. The findings suggest apprenticeships are gaining legitimacy as an alternative to university, particularly for engineering and manufacturing, but clearer and more accessible information is still needed.
