Donna Marie Brand, who was convicted of helping murder 14-year-old Caroline Glachan in 1996, died in custody at Corton Vale on 26 August 2026 while serving a life sentence. Brand, Robert O'Brien and Andrew Kelly were convicted after a trial at Glasgow High Court; the court heard that Caroline was lured to the River Leven, violently attacked and found dead in the river. Police Scotland has been notified, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry will examine Brand's death.

A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across the UK during the early hours of Friday, reaching its peak at 5:12am when about 93% of the Moon will be inside Earth’s darkest shadow. Southern and eastern England are expected to have the clearest skies, while cloud may obstruct views in many other areas. It will begin at 2:24 a.m., enter the darker umbral phase at 3:34 a.m., and peak at 5:13 a.m., when about 93% of the Moon's diameter will be obscured. The Moon may appear red or copper-coloured because Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light while allowing red and orange wavelengths to reach the lunar surface. Viewing is safe with the naked eye, although clear skies and an unobstructed west-southwestern horizon will be important, especially in Ireland where the Moon will be low before setting.
