Adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) of COVISHIELD vaccination among healthcare workers in Ghana

01 Jun 2023  |  bmjopen.bmj.com
COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has led to a global health crisis. The COVISHIELD vaccine, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, has been widely administered, including in Ghana. A prospective study at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana followed 3022 healthcare workers who received both doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine. The study found a high incidence of non-serious adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) and a low incidence of serious AEFI. The first dose had a higher rate of AEFI compared to the second dose. Common adverse events included headaches, fever, and pain at the injection site. The use of paracetamol significantly reduced the duration of adverse events. The study concluded that while non-serious AEFI is common, serious AEFI is rare, and factors such as age, sex, and previous SARS-CoV-2 infection did not significantly affect the onset and duration of AEFI.

Misconceptions about COVID-19 among students were also noted, potentially affecting their attitudes towards preventive measures. The study underscores the need for better support systems, including improved internet services, access to learning devices, and mental health resources, to enhance the online learning experience.
