Media Neglect Is One of the Deadliest Weapons in Sudan’s War
Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, has evolved into a vast humanitarian catastrophe involving mass displacement, famine, civilian attacks, and the collapse of health, education, and essential services. Despite extensive documentation by the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, international political and media attention remains far below the scale of the crisis. The dangers facing civilians in El Obeid, including repeated drone attacks, illustrate the worsening situation. Comparisons with the sustained coverage and international mobilization surrounding Ukraine and Gaza raise questions about unequal global concern and whether political interests influence news agendas. Continued neglect risks further state collapse and greater suffering for Sudanese civilians.
