What New York's government-run supermarkets with cheap prices under socialist Mamdani will be like
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to open five publicly funded supermarkets, one in each borough, offering selected basic foods at prices 30% below typical market levels. The city expects households to save about US$90 per month and will subsidize products while hiring a private operator, providing public funding for construction, renovations and operating advantages. The first store is planned for the Bronx in late 2027, with the others expected by 2029. Small-business and supermarket associations warn that the policy could create shortages, long queues and unfair competition, while Mamdani argues that excluding alcohol, tobacco, gambling and hot food will allow neighborhood stores to retain important revenue streams.
