Clacton by-election recap after Nigel Farage easily wins with Count Binface second
Nigel Farage won the Clacton by-election for Reform UK with 22,239 votes and a 12,784-vote majority, while satirical candidate Count Binface finished second with 9,455. Turnout was 44.37%, down by more than 14 percentage points from the 2024 general election. Farage did not attend the count, claiming Essex Police had warned of an organized disruption campaign, but Essex Police said there had been no incidents and that attendance was a decision for candidates and their security teams. Labour and the Liberal Democrats used the result to renew criticism of Farage over a reported £5 million gift and other controversies. His return to Parliament also triggered the resumption of a parliamentary standards investigation.

Watch solar eclipse 2026 live stream as UK to be plunged into near darkness

The Manchester Evening News and NASA are providing livestreams, while experts recommend ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods because direct exposure can cause delayed and potentially permanent retinal damage.

The UK’s biggest solar eclipse this century will occur on Wednesday evening, with more than 90% of the Sun covered in many areas and up to 96% coverage in parts of Devon and Cornwall. The eclipse’s peak will move from northern Scotland to Land’s End in about 15 minutes, and a postcode tool provides local timings. Clear skies are expected across much of England and Wales, while cloud could obstruct views in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England. Viewers are warned never to look directly at the Sun without ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses or equivalent safe projection methods, as ordinary sunglasses are insufficient.

Met Office verdict on fourth UK heatwave in August as temperatures to dip
Temperatures across the UK are expected to fall over the weekend, ending the current heatwave if local thresholds are breached. The Met Office forecasts a return to very warm or hot conditions in southern and southeastern England early the following week, which could produce a fourth distinct heatwave of 2026 if thresholds are met for three consecutive days. August is likely to begin with changeable weather, while more settled, drier and warmer conditions may develop from the second week, although Atlantic fronts could affect northern areas and thunderstorms remain possible in the south.
