Over a fifth of holidaymakers fall victim to costly tourist traps abroad
A survey of 2,000 holidaymakers found that 27% had knowingly been overcharged or ripped off abroad, losing an average of £200, while 52% believe popular destinations are increasingly exploitative. Common traps include inflated food and drink prices, overpriced taxis, hidden payment fees, misleading tours and unsolicited services. Reliable internet access makes many travellers feel safer and helps them navigate, contact family and access bookings. The survey’s commissioner, eSIM provider Airalo, recommends researching destinations, checking reviews, using licensed taxis and avoiding large amounts of cash, while promoting discounted data plans.
