New data shows Yorkshire business face financial distress
Nearly 3,700 Yorkshire companies were in critical financial distress as of June 30, 2026, a 7.9% year-on-year increase, according to BTG Red Flag Alert data. A further 45,645 businesses faced less severe significant distress, although this category fell by 0.4% in Yorkshire. Rising costs, energy and fuel prices, and economic uncertainty continue to pressure firms. Distress declined in 14 of 22 sectors, with utilities, hotels and accommodation, wholesale, and printing and packaging showing the strongest improvements, while property services, leisure and culture, automotive, and manufacturing deteriorated.

Pickering Running Club Members Win Fell Running Prizes
Members of Pickering Running Club competed in several challenging events across Wales and northern England. Simon Rycroft completed a 14-mile race alongside the Talyllyn Railway steam train, while Karen Harper, Lydia Adrian, Nicola Wise and Dean Wise took part in the Morland Half, with Wise winning the M70 category. At the inaugural Langdale End Fell Race, Lucy Saggers won the F55 prize, Jo Towler won the F50 prize and Paul Smith finished third in the M65 category. Other club members completed the technical fell-running course, and Lynsey Hatfield also finished the Scorton Feast 10k.

Children under 16 can travel free on most bus services across North Yorkshire throughout August, while young people under 19 retain access to £1 journeys through an existing regional scheme. LNER Lowers Carbon Emissions as East Coast Journeys Increase
LNER reported a 9% reduction in carbon emissions over the past year while carrying more than 25 million passengers across its East Coast Main Line network. The operator added more than 10,000 annual services and 60,000 weekly seats, while 96% of its mileage remained powered by electric overhead lines.
