Station Road and Mill Lane to close for several weeks
Station Road in Yedingham will close for scheme works between August 24 and October 30, 2026, while Mill Lane in Church Houses will close for water-main and service-connection works from August 24 to October 2, 2026. Access to properties will be maintained, with signed diversion routes where appropriate. North Yorkshire Council is managing the Station Road closure, and United Infrastructure is managing the Mill Lane works.

York research raises concerns over weight-loss drug support
Research involving UK users of GLP-1 weight-loss medications found that 48% obtained information through social media, while healthcare professionals were consulted less often. Although 93% reported positive effects on body weight and 83% on appearance, participants also described fatigue, reduced energy, skipped meals and concerns about muscle loss. Researchers warned that users may take these medications without appropriate checks and face inadequate support when they stop treatment.

Queen Elizabeth II play announced for York Theatre Royal
A new play, By Royal Appointment, will run at York Theatre Royal from November 10 to 14. Written by Daisy Goodwin, the production stars Jane Asher as Queen Elizabeth II and Samantha Womack as her dresser, examining how the monarch’s wardrobe helped shape her public image. Anthony Banks directs, with David Robb and Matthew Cottle also in the cast, and a post-show discussion scheduled for November 12. Tickets are priced at £15 through the theatre’s 16–30 membership scheme.

Spirit of Yorkshire Marks 10 Years with Sell-Out Weekend
Spirit of Yorkshire celebrated its 10th anniversary with a sold-out two-day open weekend on August 1 and 2, attracting more than 600 visitors. The event featured distillery tours, masterclasses, tastings and talks, including opportunities to sample two anniversary whiskies and the annual Yorkshire Day bottling. Barratt Homes development in Boroughbridge sells out
Barratt Homes has completely sold out its Harclay Park development in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. The site offered three-, four- and five-bedroom houses amid 17 acres of green space, attracting buyers seeking countryside living with access to Leeds, York and local amenities. Barratt Homes sales director Sam Wood attributed the success to the range of properties and said the company was helping the final buyers settle in. The company also supported the local community through initiatives including a donation to the Marton cum Grafton Community Tennis Courts Association, while its nearby Stump Cross development was also rapidly reserving its final properties.

Yorkshire Water begins new £2.5m River Ouse project
Yorkshire Water has begun a £2.5 million project at the Poppleton Road North combined sewer overflow in York. An underground tank holding 250,000 litres of stormwater will be installed at Howe Hill Allotments without affecting allotment plots. The scheme is expected to reduce discharges into the River Ouse by 86%, limiting them to fewer than 10 annually, as part of the company’s wider £1.5 billion investment programme through April 2030. It follows a similar project at Landing Lane and further storm overflow improvements planned for the area.

Tom Wilson shares addiction and recovery journey in memoir
York-based writer Tom Wilson has published his debut memoir, How to Relapse and Die Part One: The Intrepid Odyssey of a Salford Alcoholic. The book recounts his Salford childhood, alcoholism, deteriorating mental health and recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as the first 25 years of his sobriety. Originally a 480-page manuscript, it was divided into two books. Wilson’s later work in drama, mental health outreach, writing and visual art has been shaped by recovery, and he hopes the memoir will offer entertainment and encouragement to people affected by addiction and anyone interested in resilience and personal transformation.
