Concacaf rejects Fifa’s World Cup stake sale proposal citing ‘deep concerns’ about the process
CONCACAF and its 41 member associations rejected FIFA’s proposal to sell minority stakes in a new $20 billion subsidiary managing the World Cup and other competitions, citing inadequate due process, a short consultation deadline and the absence of governance, financial and legal reviews. UEFA and its members have gone further by threatening to boycott FIFA tournaments unless the plan is abandoned, while the Asian confederation also condemned FIFA’s lack of consultation. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has framed the proposal as a way to broaden financial benefits, but opposition from regional confederations and players’ representatives has intensified the organization’s governance crisis. Africa and Oceania have yet to decide, while CONMEBOL has not publicly commented.
