Jersey business owner says minimum wage comments are 'madness'
Jersey businesses, charities and politicians have reacted to Economic Development Minister Gerald Voisin’s criticism of the minimum wage. Coffee Republic owner Frank De Jesus called the comments “madness,” saying businesses face high costs but must still ensure workers feel valued, while Caritas warned that lowering wages would worsen poverty and raise concerns about modern slavery. The Chamber of Commerce supports retaining the minimum wage but wants an independent review, including more sectoral flexibility and better use of tax and benefits. The dispute began after business author Douglas Kruger and Value Jersey called for the minimum wage to be scrapped, a position Reform Jersey condemned as divisive. Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham has rejected Voisin’s view and reaffirmed a long-term commitment to linking the minimum wage to the living wage.
